This schedule is very tentative, to give you a rough idea of what we will cover, and when. Very shortly you will have a more typical schedule, prepared in my usual tabular form.
lecture 01:client-server

The architecture, and the necessity for standards. Will include as an example which our work will be based upon, a discussion of the Secure Shell protocol.

lecture 02:naming

How clients and servers get together, and the DNS protocol that is the basis for this.

Includes a full, and important, discussion of security issues, and examples of installation of very secure and stable software.

lecture 03:mailing

Perhaps the most ubiquitous way in which information is transferred between machines.

lecture04:Logins

Your professor will be at Java One.

The guest lecturer will be our own Craig Walker, who will talk about setting up and administering user accounts on distributed machines.

Your professor will also be visiting "the grandkids".

The guest lecturer will be our own Ravi Pakala, who will talk about Jini, a very neat architecture for connecting clients and servers at every level.

Bringing us up to date on the HTTP protocol, with examples of processing using servlets.

Lecture 07:servers

Some discussion of server-side processing.

Lecture 8: Java content handling

The focus is on the parts of the package java.net that handle URLs and their content.

Details on the Java Cryptography Architecture.

Lecture 10:XML

Details on XML Parsing.

Lecture 11:Web Services

General discussions of web services, including SOAP, UDDI, WSDL, ebXML.
